My intentions in this design are to draw attention to the fact that not all smiles are necessarily real or genuine. I think that in our society it is expected that we all be happy. We always present ourselves as happy even when experiencing inner-turmoil. When people ask us how we are doing the instinctive response is to say that we are fine. Why is this so? I feel like smiles are a fabrication—a façade that we project for the sake of other people and not ourselves.
I tried to visually represent this construction of a front. I think “happiness” can be epitomized with a smile, which is why I chose it as my visual element—a very mechanical and angular smile that is being built like a routine construction job. And I believe that smiles are mechanical routines that we practice everyday for the sake of society.
